SUPPRESSION OF NON-STATIONARY NOISE BY THE WEIGHTED VERTICAL SUMMATION AND MEDIAN FILTERING

Where the vertical stacking is applied in seismic investigations with an impulsive or a vibratory energy source, there is an opportunity to cancel non-stationary noise created by moving vehicles, forest cutting, ice cracking, etc. The known and effective tools for suppression of such types of noise are diversity stacking (a classical approach) and median fdtering (a simplified approach). This paper contains the results of experimental studies of low-amplitude and high-amplitude noise suppression with the aid of these two approaches. It has been shown that high-amplitude ice-crack noise (frost breaks) can be effectively filtered out at the stage of seismic data acquisition. The preservation of relative amplitudes in stacked records has been analyzed.......

On the choice of weights of summing the seismic trails. Comments to the article by A. V. Cherepovskij

It is shown that weighted stacking of segments of seismic traces with weights inverse proportional to the energy of the segments is in general non-optima/ for detection of signal in its interference with noise of various natures. On the other hand, this approach might lead to satisfactory results in some asymptotic cases. Weight computation with the help of median editing-and trimmed mean-based techniques are analyzed.......
